Portland was built on a place known as The Clearing, which is situated on the banks of the Willamette River midway between Oregon City and Fort Vancouver. In 1843 William Overton understood that the region had great potential, but lacked the funds to acquire land. He entered into a contract with his partner Asa Lovejoy. For 25 cents, Overton shared the site of 2.6 km ².

Annoyed at the idea of cutting trees and building roads, Overton sold half of his land to Francis W. Pettygrove. When they arrived at the yet to be named new town, Pettygrove and Lovejoy both wanted to name it after their hometowns. They ended the dispute with a coin toss. Pettygrove won and named the town after the city of Portland (Maine) (it would later become Boston).

Portland is in the shadow of Oregon City, the territorial capital located 19 kilometres upstream of the Willamette Falls. However, because it is located at a point on the river which is important to navigation, it has a key advantage over other ports. It quickly became the main town in the state, growing much faster then the rival cities of Milwaukie and Sellwood. In 1850 Portland had 800 inhabitants, a steam sawmill, a hotel and a newspaper, and the Weekly Oregonian. Portland was the main port in the region during much of the nineteenth century until the 1890s when access by rail between the deep water port of Seattle and the Stampede Pass was built. The goods can then be transported without the help of ships. But this did not stop the city from maintaining its position as the metropolis of Oregon.

LOS ANGELES – Singer Nate Dogg, whose near monotone crooning anchored some of rap’s most seminal songs and helped define the sound of West coast hip-hop, has died at age 41.

Nate Dogg, whose real name was Nathaniel D. Hale, died Tuesday of complications from multiple strokes, said Attorney Mark Geragos.

Nate Dogg wasn’t a rapper, but he was an integral figure in the genre: His deep voice wasn’t particularly melodic, but its tone — at times menacing, at times playful, yet always charming — provided just the right touch on hits including Warren G’s “Regulate,” 50 Cent’s “21 Questions,” Dr. Dre’s “The Next Episode” and countless others.

While Nate Dogg provided hooks for rappers from coast to coast, the Long Beach, Calif., native is best known for his contributions to the West Coast soundtrack provided by the likes of Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Tha Dogg Pound and more. Nate Dogg was even part of a “supergroup” featuring Snoop Dogg and Warren G, called 213.

Nate Dogg, who had suffered at least two strokes since 2008, also put out his own solo projects but was best known for his collaborations with others.

Last year, Warren G said Nate Dogg was in therapy but needed help.

“Everybody just gotta keep him in their prayers, ’cause he had two strokes and that’s real dangerous. And a lot of people don’t come back from that,” he said in an interview to HipHollywood. “‘Cause the game needs him, I need him.”

After word of his death spread, tributes poured in on Twitter.

“We lost a true legend n hip hop n rnb. One of my best friends n a brother to me since 1986 when I was a sophomore at poly high where we met,” Snoop Dogg tweeted Tuesday night.

Like Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg got his start on Death Row when he was signed to the groundbreaking label by Dr. Dre. Nate Dogg got his start singing in the local church choir. He dropped out of high school to join the Marines but after three years was dishonorably discharged.

He briefly got involved with the drug trade before forming a musical group with Snoop and Warren G. It was Warren G who was credited with giving their music to Dr. Dre.

Nate Dogg made his debut on Dr. Dre’s classic album “The Chronic,” and immediately distinguished himself with a trademarked sound: a low, steady croon that came across as intimidating as the rap verses.

His vocals made him one of the most sought after collaborators for rap songs. Fifty Cent, who tapped Nate Dogg for his 2003 love song “21 Questions,” tweeted Tuesday: “I wrote the chorus to 21 questions I needed nate to sing it for me. He had a way of making everything feel hard.”

Nate Dogg could be heard on songs ranging from Ludacris’ “Area Codes” to Tupac Shakur’s “All About U” to Eminem’s “Shake That.” Even as times changed, and rappers came and went, he didn’t fall out of fashion.

He faced several legal problems. In 1996, he was acquitted of an armed robbery charge; a jury deadlocked on another and he was not retried. In 2000, Nate Dogg was accused of trying to kidnap an ex-girlfriend, but those charges were dismissed. He pleaded no contest to gun possession and was sentenced to probation.

In January of 2008, he suffered a debilitating stroke but a few months later was arrested for stalking and threatening his estranged wife. He appeared in court in a wheelchair. The charge was dropped a year later.

Nate Dogg spent the last years of his life trying to rebound from his medical problems.

“All dogs go to heaven … RIP NATE DOGG,” tweeted Snoop Dogg.

I’ve lived in Portland Oregon now for about 15 years. I moved with my parents from Santa Rosa California when my mother’s job changed. I really didn’t want to leave the only place I had ever known, but once I got used to Portland, it wasn’t too bad. The biggest difference is the weather. California is sunny and hot while Oregon is mostly rainy and cold. The summer in California is extremely hot and the winter months in Oregon are very wet.

Portland provides many fun things to do. The town is very multicultural so there are a ton of little restaurants to try out. I’m a big fan of Asian food and Portland does not disappoint. Thai food is probably my favorite and Portland seems to have a Thai food restaurant on every corner. The food is very authentic and tastes amazing, for a reasonable price. I also love Indian food and while there are not as many Indian food joints as Thai food, they are still amazing. You can also find a wide assortment of ethnicities represented with restaurants, such as Ethiopian, German, Chinese, Mexican and Middle Eastern.

Portland is a very green city. There are trees everywhere and it’s very beautiful. If you are an outdoors type of person you would really enjoy Portland. There are more hiking trails and parks then you can count. With several parks and forests, there is no shortage of places to get away from the noisy sites and sounds of the city. Portland is also very bike and pet friendly. Many people bike to their jobs and around town. There are many bike paths available. You can also take your dog to one of the many dog parks to socialize with other animals. I’ve even been to some businesses that allow their employees to bring their animals to work. I was surprised to be sitting at a desk and see a dog walk by.

Portland has a great night life as well. There are many fancy clubs with great music. There are many unique clubs including an old remodeled church, a club that drops water from the ceiling when its warm and clubs that are underground.

Another amazing thing about Portland are it’s bars. Beer is big in Portland and there are over 1000 brands of beer bottled in and around town. There are also more bars then I can count. It’s very easy to get a taxi or ride the MAX (train type transportation) and go bar hopping around town. The people are friendly and the beer is plentiful.

If all of this wasn’t enough for you, Portland has an NBA team and a huge stadium called the Rose Garden. If you are not into sports, they also hold many concerts and other events there. The MAX stops right outside and it’s easily accessible. There are shows there almost once a week when the basketball season is not going on.

Next time you are thinking of visiting the North West, check out Portland and you will not regret it. Stay a few nights and get a feel for the town and enjoy all the activities it has to offer.

As the job market becomes increasingly tenuous and global and as family ties become stretched, more and more people will face major, cross-country moves, not once, but often several times in their lives. Most of us will not grow old in the city or state in which we were born and raised.

In order to accommodate the ever-expanding need for mobility, numerous companies offer comprehensive services that enable people to relocate with relative ease. In short, moving civilian goods around the country is big business.

This service to countless Americans does not, however, come without challenges to the moving companies themselves. Often, they must work within very specific time constraints based on the expectations of a customer’s newest employees. It may not be good enough to tell a customer that his or her items will arrive at their destination in two or three weeks, for instance. This is not dissimilar to military moves, which are often very time sensitive.

Another challenge is that the customer may have only the vaguest idea of the environment into which he or she will be moving. With increasing frequency, people are transacting rentals online, often never physically seeing their new digs until the day they move in. Given this fact, a person cannot really give movers an accurate idea of where they can park their truck, how many steps lead to the apartment, or if the sofa will fit through the narrow front door.

Another obstacle civilian moving companies are confronting is related to the current downturn in the economy. Many financially strapped customers simply do not have a great deal of discretionary income, especially those who may be forced to move because of foreclosure or job loss.

In this competitive market, they can scarcely afford to pass the entire cost onto financially struggling civilian consumers. By contrast, the costs to relocate military personnel are picked up by the U.S. government, making these companies less susceptible to ups and downs in the oil market.

Although there certainly are barriers and challenges which add to the difficulty of cross-country relocation, there is no reason to believe that the trend will slow any time soon. Because moving civilian goods around the country is such big business, large moving companies will certainly find ways to keep providing consistent, cost effective service in spite of the obstacles.

Portland, Oregon Real Estate Market Forces Buyers To Get Creative

The real estate market in Portland, OR is forcing potential buyers to think creatively.

Many neighborhoodsespecially in some of Portlands more desirable locations: Alameda, Mount Taber, Hawthorne, Rose City Park and Multnomahremain costly and coveted.

Buyers who are ready to purchase a home but cant afford the high prices of these neighborhoods are looking to smaller homes as alternatives.

Homes with three bedrooms or less are considerably less expensive than a home with three or four bedrooms. This is common sense. But the clever part is when a home has existing space that could in the future be converted into another bedroom or bathroom.

Such was the case when a young couple from Oregon searched for their first home. They had been renting for years, had saved money, and knew where they wanted to live. But they couldnt afford the down payment on a home that had more than two bedrooms. The Oregonian ran an interesting feature article about the couple.

As recently as last summer, former pro baseball player Given Kutz and his wife, Katie, a nurse, weren’t in the market to buy a house. Kutz was transitioning to a law enforcement career, while his wife was preparing to graduate from nursing school.

“We had talked about an investment, a house we knew would appreciate if we put a little work into it,” said Kutz, a former University of Portland baseball pitcher who had played for the Great Lakes Loons, a Class A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. “We originally thought about buying something larger — three bedrooms, two baths. We had some savings, but with the market doing what it’s doing and the money we had, we were forced to look at smaller homes.”

Eventually, M Realty broker Alicia Selliken found them a prospect: a two-bedroom, 1910-vintage “Sears bungalow,” assembled from mail-order parts, on Northeast 66th Avenue. Kutz loved the Rose City Park neighborhood, the unique character of the home and the fact that it had an unfinished basement. Eventually, the couple offered $213,000: $40,000 under its appraised price. The offer was accepted, and they’ve already finalized plans to add a bedroom, bathroom and laundry room to the basement.

It seems this is becoming a trend. Three bedroom homes are more expensive and there are more of them on the market. Six times as many three bedrooms were recently listed for sale on the RMLS system in the early part of 2008. The homes tend to stay on the market longer, too. Two-bedroom homes spent an average of 54 days on the market, while three bedroom homes stayed on for 71 days.

It is also essential to bear in mind that even when you do find such an apartment, there will be basic requirements to meet. One is that you must have a job and have had it at least 6 months. Another is that your job must be paying you at least 3 times the amount of the rent and thirdly, you may have to go through a background check.
